The quarter-circle forward for the less experienced is done as follows -> down, right diagonal. It is called this way because it draws a quarter circle on the directional cross (or analog stick). Same thing for the quarter circle back, only instead of going to the right it goes to the left always starting from the bottom.
The half circle instead of starting from the bottom starts either from the right or from the left (back for left and forward for right) and ends exactly 180 degrees later. It is so called because it draws a half circle on the directional cross or on the analog stick.
